Year of the Ox is upon us

This past week's Lantern Festival marked the end of the celebration of Chinese New Year here in the capital city. Chinese New Year is the most major holiday in Chinese culture, and nearly all Chinese in mainland China will travel back home to reunite with family. In Beijing, the new year was warmly ushered in, most visibly, with days on end of fireworks and large temple fair gatherings. Sadly, the holiday ended on a tragic note when part of the new state-media complex was destroyed in a fire caused by an unauthorized fireworks display. The Mandarin Oriental building was unoccupied.
