Xinhua launches overseas news channel

Xinhua News -- the flagship media organization of mainland China -- has announced plans to launch a 24-hour English-language news channel, in an effort to increase the influence and reach of Chinese news to international audiences, major news including the New York Times reports. The push overseas by Xinhua, which is controlled by the Chinese government and often serves as a propaganda arm of its ruling party, is part of overseas media investments that are designed to influence international coverage of China-related issues. The outcome of this initiative will be closely watched by all news organizations, and observers no doubt will be curious about its portrayal of news. "We've criticized them a lot because they're a propaganda tool," said a reporter with Reporters Without Borders. "So the fact that they want to expand in the U.S., we'd like to see what that would look like."
