US ambassador confirmation begins

US ambassador-designate and current governor of Utah Jon Huntsman began his confirmation hearings with the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee in Washington yesterday, the Associated Press reports. Gov. Huntsman received lavish bipartisan praise for his credentials, which include fluency in Mandarin and having been a past ambassador to Singapore and a former trade representative, and he is expected to be confirmed easily. Gov. Huntsman, who lived in Taiwan as a Mormon missionary and has an adopted daughter from China, spoke of his commitment to work with China to help regain the robustness of the world economy and halt North Korean missile programs, among other priorities. After the hearing he answered questions from Chinese media in Mandarin--reportedly telling them that "Utah was the best state in the United States."
