Thousands marry on today's lucky date

Today -- the ninth day of the ninth month of 2009 -- thousands of couples in Beijing and many more elsewhere in China got married because today's date is considered to be very lucky, the China Daily reports. In Beijing, more than 10,000 couples are expected to register their marriages with authorities; in Shanghai and Guangzhou, the number is about 6,000 couples. The date 9/9/09 is auspicious because in Chinese the number 9 is pronounced exactly like the word for "longevity" or "eternal" -- both the number nine and 久 are pronounced jiǔ -- and jiǔjiǔ or 久久 is a common spoken way to express something endless or infinite. Says 30-year-old newlywed Thomas Wong, "I chose this date '999' as it signifies everlasting love...I hope to give my wife a memorable wedding, it's once in a lifetime we get these auspicious numbers." The last time such a lucky date came around was last August -- 8/8/08 -- because the Chinese word for "eight" (bā) sounds similar to a common expression of "to get rich" (fa or 发, as in fācái or 发财).
