Nuggets defeat Pacers in NBA exhibition

Yesterday in Beijing the Denver Nuggets beat the Indiana Pacers by a score of 128-112 with a tremendous 45-point performance from Carmelo Anthony, the Washington Post reports. Part of the NBA's China Games initiative, the preseason exhibition matchup was an opportunity for NBA fans in Beijing to check out some of their favorite stars in live action, and it's reported that the sold-out crowd of 15,000 "remained enthusiastic to the end." Held in the Wukesong Arena that hosted the Olympic basketball competitions -- and incidentally will play host to Beyoncé's upcoming Beijing show -- yesterday's event was the 8th game the NBA has staged in China since 2004. The NBA is very popular in China and seeks to capitalize on the country's large market of basketball fans, and to this end the league has supported the growth of China's own domestic basketball league, the China Basketball Association (CBA). Prior to tipoff yesterday, NBA Commissioner David Stern announced that a number of Chinese coaches would be invited to spend a full season with NBA teams in order to study coaching techniques -- in addition to exchanges of other coaches and nutritionists. In related news, the NBA is also holding preseason matchups in Spain, London and Mexico, and three days ago both the Nuggets and Pacers competed against each other in Taipei, where the Pacers came out on top 126-104.
