NY Yankees to tour trophy

For the first time in the team's long and storied history, the New York Yankees this week will bring their 2009 World Series trophy on a tour of East Asia, with scheduled stops in Tokyo, Beijing and Hong Kong, according to Major League Baseball. While baseball is huge in Japan -- Japanese slugger Hideki Matsui earned the World Series MVP last year -- the sport is far less popular in China, as seen in the fact that Beijing demolished the Olympic baseball field to build real estate projects. Despite this, Major League Baseball is keenly interested in the Chinese market and in 2007 signed a strategic alliance with the Chinese Baseball Association, a non-profit and non-government organization that represents China in the International Baseball Federation. After first stopping in Tokyo, a delegation of Yankees representatives will travel to Beijing and display the 2009 World Series trophy at the New World Department store in Chongwenmen, a stop on the blue subway line number 2, on February 3 at 5pm local time, before traveling on to Hong Kong.
