Labor Day national holiday

Today marks the beginning of China's Labor Day holiday, one of a handful of national holidays throughout the year. The holiday, which lasts for 3 days including the weekend, gives people nationwide a chance to travel and visit family. Along with other public holidays like Spring Festival and October's National Day, observance of Labor Day in China is considered partly an economic policy because of the sharp increase in travel and tourist activity it induces. Prior to reforms in 2008 the Labor Day holiday had more economic significance because it was a "golden week" where most workers had an entire week and two weekends off from work to travel.
