Japanese PM to visit next week

China has confirmed that Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso will visit Beijing on April 29 and 30, BBC News reports. The trip to Beijing will be the first for the Japanese PM, who took office in September of last year. The meeting, which will discuss pressing international questions like responding to the financial crisis, was in some doubt because Mr. Aso recently sent a gift of a plant to the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo. The shrine, which commemorates Japan's fallen soldiers, is controversial because it also remembers several WWII generals who were deemed international war criminals. China, it should be noted, was occupied by Japan from 1931-45.
