Yesterday afternoon at about 12:30 pm Zhuo Lin, the widow of late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, passed away in a Beijing hospital at age 93, China Central Television reports. Born in Yunnan province in 1916, she joined the Communist Party in 1938, and the following year she and Deng married in Yan'an, the base in northwest China from which the Communist Party staged its efforts of national reunification. Lin was married to Deng, who passed away in 1997, for 58 years, and during that time she served in the National People's Congress, visited Washington, DC, during Deng's historic 1979 trip, and in 1988 received the Independence Merit Medal from the People's Liberation Army. Her husband Deng Xiaoping may be best remembered for championing China's economic reforms 30 years ago.
